Bobcats Open MCAC Softball with Sweep of York

(YORK, NE) The Peru State Bobcats officially opened MCAC action after a one day weather delay and swept a doubleheader from York College by identical 11-2 margins. The 'Cats are 14-12 for the season, 2-0 in the MCAC.

The games were similar in many regards: the Bobcats had 11 runs 12 hits in each contest, pitching and defense was solid in both games and Brittany Fry (Fort Calhoun) led the Bobcats offense.

Fry finished 2-for-4 in the opener with a pair of doubles and five RBI. Her encore in the nightcap included a homerun and four additional RBI in going 2-for-3. "Brittany had a great afternoon," said Bobcats coach Mark Mathews of his new found slugger. Fry leads the team with a .411 average, including a .699 slugging percentage. Fry did have plenty of help in both games, however, as Liz Cunningham (Fremont), Nicole Mercer (Wichita, KS) and McKayla Clark (Ashland) all added two hits in each shortened contest. Dani Metzler (Omaha) also collected two hits in the opener with Alyssa Mangum (Nebraska City) repeating the feat in game two.

The Bobcats received strong pitching as Laura Kjar (Wood River) scattered six hits in the opener to shut down York with Lauren Fiori (Colorado Springs, CO) performing at the same high level in game two. Fiori allowed only four hits and struck out five in her dominating performance.

"We played with a focus that I haven't seen all year," added Mathews. "We wanted to make a statement as league play begins and I think we did that."

The Bobcats host a pair of league doubleheaders this weekend as Haskell University comes to Peru on Friday (3:00 p.m. start) with Park University visiting on Saturday (1:00 p.m. start).
