Bobcats Conclude Regular
Season with Sweep of Central Christian
(McPHERSON, KS) The
Bobcats finished the regular season by sweeping a
weekend softball doubleheader from Central Christian
College by identical 10-1 margins. The wins improve
the 'Cats record to 24-20, 9-3 MCAC, heading into
the league playoffs Thursday hosted by MCAC regular
season champion Park University. The #3 seeded
Bobcats will open playoffs against rival Bellevue
University (#2) in a noon contest in Parkville, MO.
#1 Park will open action against #4 York College at
10:00 a.m. The teams will play a double elimination
format tournament that concludes Friday.
Prior to defeating CCC, the Bobcats stopped in
Salina, KS for a non-league double-dipper with
Kansas Wesleyan (19-14). The two teams split games
with KWU winning the first game 5-0 and the Bobcats
rebounding for an 8-2 decision in the nightcap. KWU
scored all five runs in the fifth inning using an
outfield error and five consecutive hits, including
a pair of RBI doubles, to break open a scoreless
pitcher's duel between KWU's Katie Coker and PSC's
Laura Kjar (Wood River). The Bobcats were held to
three singles by Coker and were unable to get a
runner past second base in the contest. Kjar allowed
only the five hits and recorded two strikeouts.
Lauren Fiori (Colorado Springs, CO) pitched the
final 1.2 innings for PSC.
The Bobcat bats came to life in game two and pounded
out 12 hits. Alyssa Mangum (Nebraska City) and Marie
Poole (Ashland) led the way each going 3-for-4 with
three and two RBI respectively. Mangum blasted a
3-run homer in a four run sixth inning. Jen Siedlik
(Omaha) added two hits including a two-bagger. Fiori
worked the first three innings from the circle
before giving way to Jocelyn Anson (Brunswick) and
Nicole Goodrich (Eagle).
"Kansas Wesleyan has a good team and an excellent
pitcher in Coker," said Bobcats coach Mark Mathews.
"We just didn't hit the ball well enough in the
first game to support our pitching."
The 'Cats received solid pitching and hitting in
defeating CCC to finish tied with Bellevue at 9-3 in
the MCAC. Goodrich tossed five innings of two-hit
shutout ball to gain the win with Anson throwing the
final two frames. The Bobcats garnered ten hits in
the contest led by Liz Cunningham (Fremont) who
finished 3-for-4 with a RBI. Poole had a pair of
hits including a double in her four at bats and
Nicole Mercer (Wichita, KS) had three RBI on a
double and sacrifice fly.
Central Christian grabbed a 1-0 first inning lead in
the nightcap before the Bobcats took the lead for
good with a three-run third frame as Poole and Jen
Siedlik (Omaha) produced RBI doubles. A six-run
fifth inning ended the contest by the eight-run
rule. The Bobcats smashed 14 hits with Cunningham
again leading the parade with a perfect 4-for-4
effort. McKayla Clark (Ashland) was 3-for-3 with one
RBI. Siedlik, Poole and Dani Metzler (Omaha) all had
three RBI performances. Anson gained the pitching
win going the first three innings allowing only one
run and two hits while striking out four. Fiori
shutout the Tigers the last two innings in relief of
Anson. "These wins are exactly what we needed
heading into playoffs," said Mathews. "We are ready
to go physically and mentally."
