Bobcats Sweep CSM in Softball

(PERU, NE) The Peru State Bobcats clinched an MCAC playoff spot with a doubleheader sweep of MCAC opponent College of St. Mary Tuesday in Peru. The Bobcats (19-15, 7-3 MCAC) are assured of at least third place entering playoffs as a result of the 6-1 and 4-3 wins.

Laura Kjar (Wood River) improved to 6-9 on the season tossing six shut out innings in the opener while striking out nine. The Bobcats unleashed a 10-hit attack, however, a two-run second inning highlighted by a Brittany Fry (Fort Calhoun) homerun were all they needed. Jen Siedlik (Omaha), Liz Cunningham (Fremont) and Dani Metzler (Omaha) had two hits apiece to lead the 'Cats attack.

Nicole Mercer's double off the center field wall scored McKayla Clark (Ashland) with the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning in a dramatic finish to game two. Mercer (Wichita, KS) also came through in a similar situation versus Bellevue University last week. Lauren Fiori (Colorado Springs, CO) spun a nifty five-hitter with nine strikeouts and held a 3-2 lead into the seventh before CSM tied the game on a solo homerun. Nicole Goodrich (Eagle) earned the win in relief for the Bobcats and improved to 7-3 on the season. Cunningham led an eight hit attack with a 3-for-4 effort.

"It was a good sweep for us," said Bobcats head coach Mark Mathews. "Laura (Kjar) and Lauren (Fiori) were overpowering at times in the circle and we had a balanced hitting attack to support the pitching. We will get a good test this weekend as we start to prepare for playoffs." The Bobcats travel to Oklahoma City this weekend for the Oklahoma City College tournament action and will face Southern Nazarene and Columbia University on Friday. Tournament play continues on Saturday.
