Bobcats Finish 2-1 at
Sterling Tournament
(Sterling,
KS) The Bobcats softball team dropped a 15-3 opening
round decision to Bethany College before topping
Tabor College (19-0) and Friends University (2-1) in
the Sterling College Tournament held in Sterling
last Friday. The event was to conclude Saturday,
however, weather forced the postponement of final
round games.
Bethany jumped to a 6-0 first inning lead against
Bobcat pitcher Lauren Fiori (Colorado Springs, CO)
and cruised to the win. Fiori and reliever Jocelyn
Anson (Brunswick) were tagged for 16 hits in a game
shortened by the 8-run rule. The Bobcats offense was
also held in check and managed only five hits. Liz
Cunningham (Fremont) had the only extra base hit for
the Bobcats, a RBI double in the fifth inning.
The Bobcats reversed the scoring trend against Tabor
College by plating five first inning runs and
steamrolled to the victory. Eight different 'Cats
collected hits led by Laura Kjar (Wood River), Marie
Poole (Ashland) and Nicole Mercer (Wichita, KS) with
two each. One of Poole's hits was a three run home
run in the third inning. In addition to Poole's long
ball, the Bobcats blasted five doubles in the
shortened contest. Nicole Goodrich improved her
record to 4-2 tossing the first two innings before
giving way to Natalie Zabel (Bancroft) who spun the
final three frames allowing only two hits.
The final game with Friends University saw the
Bobcats trailing 3-2 in the top half of the sixth
inning before the rains came. The game was forced to
be postponed and as a result, the score reverted
back to the previous inning when the Bobcats led 2-1
thus securing the win. Laura Kjar went the distance
in the circle scattering five hits. Liz Cunningham
and McKayla Clark (Ashland) each had two hits to
lead the Bobcats. Clark's hits both went for two
bases while each of the hitters also produced a RBI.
The next scheduled games for the 'Cats are Saturday
and Sunday, March 29-30 when they travel to Blue
Springs, MO for the Avila University Tournament.
