Bobcats Drop Three of
Four in Oklahoma City
(OKLAHOMA
CITY, OK) The Bobcats softball team faced some stiff
competition at the Capital City Classic in Oklahoma
City over the weekend and, after opening with a 6-3
win over William Jewell, dropped three straight
falling to 20-18 for the season. Defeating the 'Cats
were Columbia University (4-1), Oklahoma City
University (10-1) and Oklahoma Christian (7-0).
"We played some very good teams and actually I felt
that overall we played well," said Bobcats head
coach Mark Mathews. "It was usually just one bad
inning in each loss that hurt us."
In the opener against William Jewell, the Bobcats
took the lead for good in the fourth inning (3-2)
before adding RBI hits from Marie Poole (Ashland)
and Brittany Fry (Fort Calhoun) as part of a
game-clinching three run sixth inning. McKayla Clark
(Ashland) led an eight hit attack by going 3-for-3
with 2 RBI to support starting pitcher Laura Kjar
(Wood River). William Jewell collected 13 hits off
Kjar but left nine runners stranded as she was
effective in working out of trouble. Jocelyn Anson
(Brunswick) entered in relief of Kjar in the seventh
inning and shut down a one-run rally attempt.
In game two against Columbia the Bobcats opened the
scoring on a first inning RBI double from the bat of
Fry, however, were held scoreless for the remainder
of the game in dropping a 4-1 decision. Freshman
Nicole Goodrich (Eagle) scattered seven hits and
allowed only two earned runs from the circle,
however, the offense was held in check as nine 'Cats
were eliminated via strikeout. Marie Poole had a
pair of singles to lead a six-hit attack.
In the first game Saturday, host Oklahoma City
University banged out 15 hits against four Bobcat
hurlers and rolled to a 10-1 win. The Bobcats, on
the other hand, managed only three hits and were
shutout over the last six innings by OCU's Jenny
Gaby who struck out six. Two of the Bobcats hits
were doubles and came from the bats of Dani Metzler
(Omaha) and Poole. Lauren Fiori (Colorado Springs,
CO) suffered the pitching loss in relief of Kjar who
worked two innings. Fiori, Goodrich and Anson were
tagged for 14 hits and nine earned runs over the
final five innings. University of Arizona transfer
Erin Slettvet had a pair of homeruns and three RBI
for OCU.
In the final game of the weekend, Oklahoma Christian
used a six-run third inning to subdue the 'Cats 7-0.
PSC managed seven hits and were led by Liz
Cunningham (Fremont), who finished 3-for-4, and Jen
Siedlik (Omaha) who added a double and a single in
her two official at bats.
Kjar took the loss working the first 2.2 innings
allowing six runs on ten hits. Fiori and Anson split
the final 3.1 innings from the circle allowing only
one run and three hits. The Bobcats return to the
diamond Tuesday when they travel to Atchison, KS to
play Benedictine College at 3:00 p.m.
