Bobcats Drop Pair to
Doane
(CRETE, NE)
The Peru State softball team dropped a non-league
doubleheader Wednesday to Doane College by scores of
5-3 and 4-3 with the nightcap going extra innings.
The Bobcats are now 7-9 on the season.
"We left too many runners in scoring position," said
Bobcats coach Mark Mathews when describing game one.
The Bobcats could not take advantage of nine base on
balls and managed only five hits which resulted in a
dozen runners left on base. Doane opened a 4-0 first
inning lead against Bobcat pitcher Laura Kjar (Wood
River) and the 'Cats never recovered. Kjar settled
in and allowed only a single run the remainder of
the contest while scattering 13 hits. She struck out
two and walked none. The Bobcats offense was led by
Jamie Wolbert (Beatrice) who finished with a pair of
singles, a RBI and a run scored.
The Bobcats bats came alive in the second game as
they pounded out ten hits. Liz Cunningham (Fremont),
Brittany Fry (Fort Calhoun) and Wolbert each
connected for two hits during the eight inning
affair. Freshman hurler Nicole Goodrich (Eagle)
scattered eight hits in going the distance while
striking out three and, like Kjar in game one,
walked no one. The Bobcats again could not take
advantage of scoring opportunities and left ten
stranded runners. "We ran ourselves out of the game
with base running mistakes," added Mathews. "Doane
took advantage of situations that we didn't."
The Bobcats return to the diamond Friday and
Saturday when they travel to Sterling, KS for the
Sterling College Tournament. The Bobcats open
against Bethany College at 10:00 a.m. Friday.
