Bobcats Gain Split with
League Leading Bruins
(PERU, NE)
Nicole Mercer's eighth inning double down the left
field line scored Liz Cunningham with the game
winning run and gave the Bobcats a dramatic split
with MCAC leading Bellevue University Wednesday in
Peru. The 6-5 win in game two came after BU topped
the 'Cats 6-3 in the opener. The Bobcats are now
17-15 overall and 5-3 in MCAC play.
Bellevue jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first game and
never looked back. The Bruins collected seven hits
off Bobcats hurler Laura Kjar (Wood River) however
she allowed only one run on two hits over the final
four frames. PSC mounted a six hit attack led by
McKayla Clark (Ashland) who finished 2-for-3 with a
RBI.
The Bruins appeared to have the second game in
control, as well, after scoring four times in a
five-hit fourth inning. The Bobcats Lauren Fiori
(Colorado Springs, CO), however, settled into a
solid pitching performance and scattered three Bruin
hits over the final five innings while striking out
five to earn the complete game win. Mercer (Wichita,
KS) had a pair of doubles for two RBI including her
dramatic game winner, however, the Bobcats 13 hit
barrage was fueled by Liz Cunningham (Fremont) and
Kerra Brummer (Omaha) who laced three hits each.
Cunningham's one out single in the eighth preceded
Mercer's liner.
Bobcats head coach Mark Mathews was pleased with his
team's effort. "We fought back in the second game
and picked up a great win. It is critical for the
MCAC standings and also as a confidence builder in
beating an excellent Bellevue team," he said. "The
game atmosphere had playoff intensity, I'm proud of
the girls."
The Bobcats were scheduled to play at the William
Jewell Tournament in Liberty, MO this weekend,
however, the weather has forced a cancellation of
the event. The Bobcats return to MCAC action on
Tuesday, April 15th when MCAC rival College of St.
Mary visits Peru. Doubleheader action begins at 3:00
p.m.
