Bobcats Split Pair with Benedictine

(ATCHISON, KS) The Bobcats (21-19, 7-3 MCAC) stepped out of MCAC action traveling to Atchison, KS Tuesday for a softball doubleheader with Benedictine College (24-10). The 'Cats opened with a 2-1 win, however, BC prevented the sweep as the result of a come-from-behind 6-5 win in the nightcap.

PSC pitcher Laura Kjar (Wood River) tossed six innings and was the recipient of the win in game one receiving relief help from Lauren Fiori (Colorado Springs, CO) in the seventh. Kjar surrendered only two hits before giving way to Fiori who picked up the save. The Bobcats offense mustered five hits with Kjar and Jen Siedlik (Omaha) both going 2-for-3.

Benedictine erased Bobcat leads of 3-0 and 5-2 before escaping with a 6-5 win in game two scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh off Fiori. Nicole Goodrich (Eagle) tossed the first six innings and allowed three earned runs and eight hits for Peru State. The Bobcats improved their offensive production and collected eight hits in the game including doubles from the bats of Kjar, Nicole Mercer (Wichita, KS) and Brittany Fry (Fort Calhoun). Fry also had a single and a sacrifice fly in her three at-bats.

"We played well against a strong team," said Bobcats coach Mark Mathews. "To be able to go into their place and win the first game was big. That should give us added confidence come playoff time."

The Bobcats conclude the regular season on the road this weekend with a non-league game at Kansas Wesleyan Friday before wrapping up MCAC play with a Saturday doubleheader at Central Christian College in McPherson, KS. Friday game time is at 4:00 p.m. while action begins at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
