Bobcats 3-2 at Avila
Tournament
(Blue
Springs, MO) The Bobcat softball team finished 3-2
at the Avila Tournament over the weekend raising
their season record to 12-12 in the process. The
Bobcats dropped a 9-3 decision to McKendree
University in the opener and also fell to Avila 7-0.
Victories came against Mid-American Nazarene (9-4),
Harris Stowe (2-1) and University of St. Mary's
(5-0).
McKendree broke a 2-2 sixth inning tie plating seven
runs to gain the first round win. Laura Kjar (Wood
River) suffered the pitching loss by allowing seven
runs and eight hits in five innings. The Bobcats
offense banged out nine hits including two each from
Dani Metzler (Omaha) and Kjar. Kerra Brummer (Omaha)
added a sixth inning double for the 'Cats only extra
base hit. The Bobcats defense was guilty of five
errors.
Nicole Goodrich (Eagle) and Jocelyn Anson
(Brunswick) combined on a six-hitter as the Bobcats
rolled over Mid-American Nazarene with a 13 hit
attack. Jen Siedlik (Omaha) led the way going 4 for
5 with two runs scored and a RBI. Nicole Mercer
(Wichita, KS) and Marie Poole (Ashland) had two hits
each with Mercer's hits driving in three runs while
Poole's added two. A shaky Bobcats defense was again
guilty of five errors.
Tournament host Avila scored a first inning run then
used their pitching to blank the 'Cats on four hits
in cruising to the 7-0 shutout win. Kjar suffered
the loss from the circle scattering nine hits in
going the distance. Alyssa Magnum (Nebraska City)
had two of the four hits for PSC.
The Bobcats once again rebounded from a loss to snag
a next game win edging Harris Stowe 2-1. Lauren
Fiori (Colorado Springs, CO) spun a six hitter with
five strikeouts in an impressive full game effort
from the circle for the Bobcats. The 'Cats scored
single runs in the second and third innings for a
2-0 lead before H-S broke Fiori's shutout in the
sixth frame. Liz Cunningham (Fremont) was 3 for 3
while Mercer and Fry had two hits each for PSC.
In the final game the Bobcats used a four run second
inning and Anson's four hit, shutout pitching to
subdue USM by a 5-0 margin. The 'Cats garnered 12
hits in the contest with Poole, Fry and Krista
Patton (Nebraska City) all collecting two. One of
Fry's hits was a home run with seven of the Bobcat
hits going for extra bases.
"We played some good competition with mixed
results," said Bobcats coach Mark Mathews. "Our
defense was up and down which negated some good
pitching. Hopefully that will improve as we begin
MCAC play." The Bobcats now travel to York College
to begin league play. The Tuesday doubleheader
begins at 4:00 p.m.
