In 1996, Mathews led the Bobcats to a school best 42-23 record and took them on their only trip to the NAIA National Tournament.

In 2006 the Bobcats won the MCAC regular season and tournament titles. These were the first MCAC championships for Peru State College in Softball.  With the teams success in 2006, Coach Mathews was awarded the MCAC and the Region IV "Coach of the Year" titles.

One of the priorities of the Softball program is success in the classroom.  During Mathews' tenure there have been 20 Bobcats that have received NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete recognition.

Mathews has also served as an Assistant Football Coach for the Bobcats under coaches Monte Meadows and Dick Strittmatter (1993-1998).

Prior to arriving at the “Campus of a Thousand Oaks” in 1994, Mathews was at Pleasanton High.  He served as the head football and boys track coach.  He also was the boy’s basketball assistant coach.

Mathews spent two seasons at Coleridge High as the head football and boys basketball coach.  He compiled a 15-6 football record and a 25-12 record in basketball.  He led the Bulldogs to two conference championships in each sport.

Mathews coached Legion Baseball in his hometown St. Paul, Neb.  In six seasons he compiled a 112-41 record, including the 1985 Class B State Championship.

A 1987 graduate of Hastings College, Mathews played on the Broncos football squad for four seasons.

In addition to his head softball duties at Peru State, Mathews is also the Intramural Director.  Mathews and his wife, Renee, reside in Peru.  They have four children: Dan, Mark, Megan, and Levi.
