Season at Peru: 15th
Mathews enters his
15th season at the helm of the Peru State
softball program. He enters the 2007 season with a
334-301 record. Mathews has more wins than any
other softball coach in Peru State history with 334
wins.
In 1996, Mathews
led the Bobcats to a school best 42-23 record and
took them on their only trip to the NAIA National
Tournament.
In 2006 the
Bobcats won the MCAC regular season and tournament
titles. These were the first MCAC championships for
Peru State College in Softball. With the teams
success in 2006, Coach Mathews was awarded the MCAC
and the Region IV "Coach of the Year" titles.
One of the priorities of the Softball program is
success in the classroom. During Mathews' tenure
there have been 20 Bobcats that have received NAIA
All-America Scholar-Athlete recognition.
Mathews has also
served as an Assistant Football Coach for the
Bobcats under coaches Monte Meadows and Dick
Strittmatter (1993-1998).
Prior to arriving
at the “Campus of a Thousand Oaks” in 1994, Mathews
was at Pleasanton High. He served as the head
football and boys track coach. He also was the
boy’s basketball assistant coach.
Mathews spent two
seasons at Coleridge High as the head football and
boys basketball coach. He compiled a 15-6 football
record and a 25-12 record in basketball. He led the
Bulldogs to two conference championships in each
sport.
Mathews coached
Legion Baseball in his hometown St. Paul, Neb. In
six seasons he compiled a 112-41 record, including
the 1985 Class B State Championship.
A 1987 graduate of
Hastings College, Mathews played on the Broncos
football squad for four seasons.
In addition to his
head softball duties at Peru State, Mathews is also
the Intramural Director. Mathews and his wife,
Renee, reside in Peru. They have four children:
Dan, Mark, Megan, and Levi. |
