Outstanding Student
Athletes Honored
with Bert Swenson Award
at Peru State College
Each
year the Peru State College (PSC) Athletic
Department and President Ben Johnson present two
outstanding student athletes with the Bert Swenson
Award. The award, which was established in 1925,
recognizes one exemplary male and female student
athlete for their participation in athletics,
outstanding character, personality, and service and
loyalty to the college. Athletes who exemplify the
standards established for the honor are nominated by
PSC coaches and selected by a ballot vote. The
winners were presented with a watch and
commemorative medal during halftime of the
homecoming football game.
The
recipients of the 2007 Bert Swenson Award are
Tabitha Foster of Plattsmouth, Neb., and Joel Molina
of Middleton, N.Y.
Foster
earned Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC)
First Team All-Conference honors in softball and was
named the MCAC’s Player of the Year. She was also
selected to the Region IV First Team and was named
the Region IV Player of the Year. Foster was named
First Team All-American as the designated player by
the National Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics (NAIA). She set an NAIA single season
record for homeruns with 29 and led the conference
with 86 RBIs in 2007. She earned additional
distinctions from the National Fastpitch Coaches
Association (NFCA), being named a First Team
All-American, First Team All-Region for the
southwest region and an All-American
scholar-athlete, which requires a minimum GPA of 3.5
for the academic year.
Foster
graduated from PSC in May with a degree in
psychology and a minor in criminal justice. She is
the daughter of Tony and Joyce Foster of
Plattsmouth.
Molina, a
senior physical education major, came to PSC in the
fall of 2005 from Hudson Valley Community College in
New York. Last spring Molina served as catcher,
second baseman and captain on the baseball team,
helping lead the Bobcats to a fourth place
conference finish. Molina batted .339, led the team
in doubles with 15 and was second in RBIs with 32.
He was named to the MCAC All-Conference Honorable
Mention last spring. Molina will graduate from PSC
in May 2008. His parents are Milton and Wanda Molina
of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
PSC's
"Campus of a Thousand Oaks," an arboretum campus, is
nestled in historic southeast Nebraska. The state's
first and fastest-growing college, Peru State offers
a unique mix of innovative online and traditional
classroom undergraduate and graduate programs,
including online graduate degrees in education and
organizational management. PSC is a member
institution of the Nebraska State College System.
