Bobcats Top Southwest
Assemblies 41-26 in Final Home Game
(PERU, NE) The Bobcats used a pair of fourth period
touchdowns to ice a 41-26 win over Southwest
Assemblies of God on Saturday at the Oak Bowl. The
Senior Day win gives Peru State a 6-4 season record
heading into the final regular season game on Friday
versus Valley City in the Fargo (ND) Dome.
A four yard
Mike Mertens (Hastings) run and a five yard John
Noojin (Deshler) scamper led to a 14-0 Bobcats lead,
however, the pesky Lions (0-9) refused to roll over
easily. The Lions cut the deficit to 14-6 before QB
Derek Falor (Sioux Falls) connected on a 57 yard TD
toss to Jared Gerdes (Auburn) for a 21-6 lead as
Bryan Miller (Nebraska City) added all three PAT's.
SWAG scored again at the 4:51 mark cutting the lead
to 21-12 at the break. A 22 yard toss from Falor to
Eli Brown (Lincoln) extended the lead to 27-12 but
the Lions answered again and the margin was 27-18
entering the final 15 minutes. Mertens added his
second score on a 1 yard run with 10:25 left and
then Jeff McQuinn (Council Bluffs, IA) forced a Lion
fumble that was returned by Matt Carlson (Auburn) 23
yards for the game clincher with 3:12 remaining.
Southwest Assemblies got the game's final score with
10 seconds left accounting for the 41-26 total.
Mertens
rushed for 141yards on 24 carries with fellow senior
Lynn Meyer (Johnson) adding 70 in only ten attempts.
The Bobcats went to the air 11 times with Falor
completing 4 for 97 yards and two scores. Gerdes had
two catches for 71 yards. SWAG rushed for 203 yards
and gained an additional 256 through the air for a
459 total. Dustin Sealey (Hastings) led the defense
recording 15 tackles on the afternoon. Shane Ryan
(Greeley) added 10 and McQuinn had nine along with
the forced fumble and a blocked extra point. DB
Bright Norris (Lincoln) broke up three passes in the
Bobcats secondary.
"Our
seniors carried us on both sides of the ball against
a better than expected SAGU," said Bobcats coach
Terry Clark. "It was great win for this group of
seniors."
