Bobcats Trounce Haskell 42-14



(LAWRENCE, KS) The Bobcats improved to 5-4 on the gridiron with a 42-14 win over Haskell University last Saturday in Lawrence. The Bobcats accumulated 545 yards of offense in the win while allowing HU only 166 total yards.
 

After the Indians opened the scoring, the 'Cats used a two touchdown second period to break the 7-7 tie forging a 21-7 lead by halftime. A one-yard Nate Jeter (Tarkio, MO) touchdown run and a 26 yard pass from Derek Falor (Sioux Falls, SD) to Cody Vosler (Madison) were followed by a pair of Bryan Miller (Nebraska City) PAT's for the early advantage.
Mike Mertens erupted for three second half scores on runs of 5 and 77 yards and a pass reception of 6 yards. Jeter added his second score of the afternoon in the fourth period from 10 yards out.
 

Mertens racked up 227 yards of turf in 27 carries while Jeter added 79 in only ten carries. Falor was a 11-22 passer for 200 yards a pair of scores. Eli Brown hauled in four catches good for 99 yards to lead the receivers.
On the defensive side linebacker Shane Ryan (Greeley) had a 13 tackle afternoon while Derek Derr (Maitland, MO) added nine. DB Fred Whitted (Ballwin, MO) added a pair of interceptions with DE Jeff McQuinn (Council Bluffs, IA) adding a pair of pass deflections up front.
 

"We played an excellent all-around game," said Bobcats coach Terry Clark. "We responded very well after the early score and made good adjustments. Our offense really stepped up and as a result made some big plays to break the game open."
 

The Bobcats return to the Oak Bowl on Saturday hosting Southwest Assemblies of God University in a 1:00 p.m. kick-off. This is the final home game of the 2007 season.
