Bobcats Fall to #16 Jamestown in Football Season Opener

(PERU, NE) The Peru State Bobcats opened the 2007 fall football campaign last Saturday at the Oak Bowl in front of a large home crowd, however, the #16 ranked Jamestown College Jimmies topped the 'Cats 36-7.

Jamestown opened a 12-0 margin after one quarter on a pair of Bryan Loweree field goals (38 and 21 yards) and a 60 yard pass and run from QB Tanner Kelting to WR Zack Bolger that covered 60 yards. A second Bolger touchdown with :42 left in the half, this one a pass from Josh Kittell covering 14 yards, gave the Jimmies a 19-0 cushion at intermission.
JC added a Kelting to Marcus McCrary TD pass covering 14 yards at 11:24 of the third for a 26-0 lead before the Bobcats got on the scoreboard at the 3:32 mark on a nine yard toss and run from Derek Falor (Sioux Falls, SD) to Lynn Meyer (Johnson). Bryan Miller (Nebraska City) added the PAT cutting the deficit to 26-7, however, the Jimmies added a 43 yard interception return of a Falor pass and another Loweree field goal in the final session for the final 36-7 margin.

The Bobcats ran more plays (66-64) in the contest but the Jimmies held a 342-216 advantage in total yards. Jamestown was held to only 93 yards rushing in 34 attempts but the QB tandem of Kelting and Kittell completed 21 of 30 passes against the 'Cats defense for 249 yards and three touchdowns. Peru State rushed for 105 yards led by senior Mike Mertens (Hastings) with 66 yards on 21 carries. Meyer added 30 yards on eight carries. Falor and backup Jim Dawson (Lincoln) completed nine of 33 passes for 111 yards. Falor suffered a pair of interceptions. Tight end Ty Ratliff (Shenandoah, IA) led the receivers with three catches for 54 yards.

The Bobcats defense was led by linebacker Derek Derr (Maitland, MO) with 3 solo and 7 assisted tackles. Jack Critchfield (Omaha), Tyler DeBuhr (Auburn), Shane Ryan (Greeley) and Matt Carlson (Auburn) each added six tackles.

"We need to be able to have players make plays when the team needs them to," said Bobcats head coach Terry Clark. "Jamestown was a very good team and they were not going to make many mistakes. They played pretty much the game we expected them to."

The Bobcats hit the road this week for a Thursday night contest with NCAA DII Minnesota State -Mankato at Blakeslee Stadium in Mankato. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. The Bobcats then return to the Oak Bowl for three straight weekends. "If we are going to take this program to the next level we need to be able to compete with teams that are from a higher level," said Clark.
