Bobcats Top Southern Nazarene 16-13



(PERU, NE) The Bobcats jumped to a 16-0 halftime lead against Southern Nazarene University and then relied on a stout defense to close out a 16-13 win giving the 'Cats their first win of the 2007 season. The Bobcats host Iowa Wesleyan University ( ) Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Oak Bowl in the 2007 Homecoming game.
 

The Bobcats got on the board first against SNU on a quarterback sneak by Derek Falor (Sioux Falls, SD) at the 10:44 mark of the first stanza that culminated a 9 play- 63 yard drive. Max Kathol (Plattsmouth) added the PAT for a 7-0 'Cat lead. The Bobcats added a second score after a 9 play- 41 yard drive as Jim Dawson (Lincoln) found Brent Wrinkle (Treynor, IA) in the corner of the endzone at the 4:55 mark of the opening period. Dawson replaced Falor in the lineup after Falor suffered a hand injury. The point after kick was wide left and the Bobcats led 13-0. Zach Kohloff (Corning, IA) added a 20 yard field goal at 11:09 of the half after the Bobcats moved 56 yards on 14 plays.
 

SNU finally got on the board early in the fourth quarter after returning a Bobcat fumble 33 yards at the 14:13 mark. The two-point conversion failed and the 'Cats led 16-6. SNU scored the final points of the contest at 2:30 on a 25 yard touchdown pass and a successful PAT for a 16-13 Bobcats lead that would hold.
 

The Bobcats rushed for 150 yards led by Mike Mertens (Hastings) who logged 83 yards on 30 rushes. Lynn Meyer (Johnson) added 57 yards on 14 carries including a 31 yard scamper. Dawson was a 5of 9 passer for 47 yards and a TD. Falor completed his only pass for 17 yards. Eli Brown (Lincoln) hauled in two throws for 25 yards. SNU finished with 148 yards on the ground and 143 via the airways for 291 total. The Crimson Storm threw the ball 31 times completing 17.
 

The Bobcats were led defensively by LB Shane Ryan (Greeley) who finished with 12 tackles. DB Fred Whitted, Jr. added eight solos and two assists for 10 more. The Bobcats secondary broke up six SNU throws led by Bright Norris (Lincoln) with a pair. The Bobcats also intercepted three passes in the game. Jeff McQuinn (Council Bluffs, IA) grabbed one that he returned for a touchdown, however, it was called back by a 'Cat penalty. Dan Strobel (Auburn) and Devin Wright (Omaha) had the other two.
 

"It is the first time that our seniors have beaten Southern Nazarene and that was one of their goals for the season," said coach Terry Clark. "I'm happy for the team, it was a nice win for us and helps to get us back on track after two losses. We made some big plays at key times on both sides of the ball."
