Bobcats Rally Falls
Short
(PERU, NE)
The Bobcats rallied from a 30-14 fourth quarter
deficit but saw a two-point conversion pass fall
incomplete in a 30-28 setback to Benedictine College
Saturday at the Oak Bowl. The loss snapped a four
game Bobcat win streak and drops their season record
to 4-3. Benedictine improved to 3-4 with the win.
The 'Cats
opened the game with a 57 yard-9 play scoring drive
culminated by a Mike Mertens (Hastings) five yard
scamper for an early 7-0 lead before the visiting
Ravens tacked on 23 unanswered points to end the
half. The Bobcats John Noojin (Deshler) scored from
three yards out and after a Bryan Miller (Nebraska
City) PAT, the lead was cut to 23-14 entering the
final stanza. BC pushed the margin to 30-14 with
14:54 remaining before the Bobcats started their
comeback.
The Bobcats
offense drove 74 yards in 12 plays before Derek
Falor (Sioux Falls, SD) connected with Eli Brown
(Lincoln) on a 15 yard scoring pass. After a Falor
conversion run the score was 30-22. The Bobcats
defense held and the offense marched 59 yards in
only six plays as Mertens rambled in from nine yards
setting up the game tying conversion attempt. A pass
attempt to Lynn Meyer (Johnson) fell incomplete and
the Ravens hung on for the road win.
The Bobcats
gained 412 yards in the contest with 192 rushing and
220 passing. Mertens led the way gaining 100 yards
on the ground on 24 attempts. Falor completed a
season high 17 passes (32 attempts) with Brown
hauling in eight of those throws for 106 yards.
Benedictine was held to 128 yards on the ground but
QB Ryan Kelly completed 26 of 35 tosses for 331
yards and three scores. Linebackers Shane Ryan
(Greeley) and Dustin Sealey (Hastings) led the 'Cats
defense with 19 and 16 tackles respectively. DB
Devin Wright (Omaha) added an interception for the
Bobcats.
"We played
a good opponent and came up short," said Bobcats
coach Terry Clark. "We now need to re-group and
finish our season strong." The Bobcats travel to NW
Oklahoma State in Alva, OK for a Saturday contest.
Kick-off is at 1:00 p.m.
