Bobcats Shutout Waldorf 20-0
The Bobcats defense bent but didn't break while the offense established a pounding running game. The result was a convincing 20-0 whitewash of Waldorf College Saturday in front of a sun-soaked crowd at the Oak Bowl. The Bobcats move to 2-2 on the season heading into a bye week.
Tailback Cody Smith (Ceresco) jump-started the Bobcats offense with a 46 yard scoring scamper at 7:32 of the opening period. Fullback Lynn Meyer (Johnson) followed with a one yard plunge to start the second quarter and the Bobcats 14-0 became more than enough. Mike Mertens (Hastings) added the icing at 6:41 of the final quarter with a 38 yard touchdown run. The Bobcats generated 246 via the rush with Mertens going over the 100 yard mark finishing with 106 yards in 15 carries. Smith added 84 in 16 attempts and Meyer pounded the middle for 42 yards on only six carries. Bryan Miller (Nebraska City) added two of three extra point attempts in a swirling wind. The Bobcats usually potent air attack went 1 of 7 for 10 yards. Waldorf countered with 102 yards on the ground and 216 in the air on 27 of 45 passing.
The Bobcats defense found themselves on the field for a large portion of the first half, however, Waldorf was not able to solve the mixture of fronts, blitzes and coverages thrown at them. Three long field goal attempts with the wind (53, 46, 47 yards) all fell short of the mark and in the final half interceptions from Rusty Fuller (Cambridge), Derek Derr (Mastland, MO) and Taylor Spears (Chandler, AZ) stopped any momentum that the Warriors tried to generate. Shane Ryan (Greeley), Dustin Sealey (Hastings) and Tyler DeBuhr (Auburn) all had double digits in tackles for the Bobcats with 12, 11 and 10 respectively.
"We gave an outstanding effort on both sides of the ball," said Bobcat head coach Terry Clark. "Whenever you get a shutout, many big plays must be made. Defensively we bent some, especially in the first half, but overall played very well. Our offense made some big plays when we needed them. The swirling wind made things tricky at times but the guys handled it. We are looking to use our bye week to heal up and to improve. We will bring our best effort to Southern Nazarene."
The Bobcats, after the off week, will travel to Bethany, OK for a September 30 CSFL contest with Southern Nazarene. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
