Texas College Stops Bobcats 29-16
Texas College used three touchdown passes from
freshman quarterback X'Zavier Bloodsaw to stun the
Bobcats 29-16 in the final game of the 2006 campaign
at the Oak Bowl on Saturday. The 'Cats finish the
year 6-5, 1-3 in CSFL play. The loss was a big
disappointment to Coach Terry Clark, his staff and
his squad, however, 2006 was a huge turnaround from
2005's 1-10 finish and with a young squad, the
future of Bobcat football is indeed bright.
The Bobcats
struck first against the Steers after a Jeff McQuinn
interception return gave the home team a 14 yard
field to navigate. Senior FB Lynn Meyer scored from
two yards out to cap a four play drive and after a
Bryan Miller PAT, the 'Cats led 7-0. Bloodsaw's
first TD throw came with 8:58 remaining in the half
and covered 67 yards to WR Tim Jones for a 7-7 tie.
He added an 8 yard throw to Carlus Ousley with only
:18 remaining in the half and the 'Cats trailed 14-7
at the break.
Bryan
Miller booted a 32 yard field goal at 10:56 of the
third to cut the deficit , however, the Steers
struck again late in the quarter on a Bloodsaw pass
to Nolan Williams for a 21-10 lead. The Bobcats
Rusty Fuller stepped in front of a Bloodsaw toss and
scampered 22 yards for a PSC touchdown with 10:51
left on the clock cutting the margin to 21-16 after
a failed PAT. A Steer TD with 1:28 left sealed the
contest.
The Bobcats
usually potent ground game was held in check by the
Steers resulting in only 113 yards. Mike Mertens led
the way with 73 yards on 18 carries. Meyer added 37
more. The Bobcat passing game netted another 88
yards with quarterback's Derek Falor and Jim Dawson
completing 4 of 17 throws. Wade Coulter caught two
balls for 70 yards. Texas College netted 299 yards,
141 rushing and 158 passing.
Defensively
the Bobcats were led by Shane Ryan with 14 tackles,
seven being solo efforts. McQuinn and Fuller added
the big play interceptions. McQuinn was also
involved in three tackles resulting in lost yardage,
Ryan Lowe added a pair.
"We could
not get anything going on offense and had trouble
stopping their very potent offense," said Bobcats
head coach Terry Clark. "It was frustrating because
we wanted to send our seniors out with a win."
