Bobcats Run Past Ottawa 38-18
The
Bobcats returned from the bye week with a vengeance
and ran past Ottawa University 38-18 in a non-league
contest played in Ottawa, KS. The 'Cats even
their record at 3-3 for the season while OU drops to
0-6.
The
Bobcats used a grueling ground attack throughout
most of the first half, however, QB Derek Falor
(Sioux Falls, SD) kept the Braves defense honest by
effectively throwing the ball as well. The Bobcats
used a 14 play - 65 yard drive to take a 7-0 lead on
a Mike Mertens (Hastings) three yard plunge. Bryan
Miller (Nebraska City) booted the PAT. After an OU
field goal cut the lead to 7-3, the Bobcats marched
86 yards in only six plays, highlighted by
back-to-back passes from Falor to Wade Coulter
(Columbus) good for 37 yards and another long strike
to Jared Gerdes (Auburn) covering 36 yards. Mertens
added another short TD run and the Bobcats pushed
the lead to 14-3. OU, however, responded moving 67
yards in only two minutes scoring on a 22 yard pass
from Guzman to Calhoun cutting the deficit to
14-10. The Bobcat offense once again rose to the
occasion and marched 55 yards in 1:16 finishing with
another short TD run from Mertens and a Miller PAT
and brought a 21-10 advantage into the locker room
at halftime.
"I was
very happy with the way we came ready to play and
also how the guys stepped up late in the half to
regain the momentum after Ottawa scored," said
Bobcats coach Terry Clark. "The offense executed
well with the running game and then and we were able
to complete several crucial pass plays when they
started to stuff the line of scrimmage."
The
Bobcat offense put together a nine play, 89 yard
scoring drive midway through the third stanza ending
with a 30 yard scoring pass from Falor to Gerdes.
Miller's fourth PAT made the score 28-10. The
Bobcats began the final quarter with another Falor 1
yard run that was set up due in large to a 34 yard
run from Mertens. Zach Kohloff (Corning, IA) add
the PAT and later added a 23 yard field goal to
conclude the Bobcat scoring.
Mertens
led the ground attack rushing for 166 yards on 29
carries and two scores. Fullback Lynn Meyer
(Johnson) added 49 in 10 rushes while freshman Nate
Jeter (Tarkio, MO) picked up 38 in 10 carries.
Falor connected on 11 of 15 passes for 218 yards and
a pair of TD's. Gerdes (6 rec.-130 yards- 2 TD's)
and Coulter (4 rec.-81 yards) were the primary
targets.
Defensively, Dustin Sealey (Hastings) had 8 tackles
to lead the way as nineteen different Bobcats
recorded tackles. Defensive back Eldro Brown
(Stella) recorded an interception and a pass
break-up while the front line recorded three sacks
led by Jeff McQuinn (Council Bluffs, IA) with 1.5.
"I feel
that our defense is very under rated and has
improved a great deal throughout the season," added
Clark. "When we play well on both sides of the line
of scrimmage we are a tough team to beat."
The
Bobcats return to Kansas on Saturday to play Bethany
College in Lindsborg, KS. Kick-off is slated for
1:00 p.m.
