Bobcats Roll to 58-0 Win Over Haskell
The Bobcats jumped to a quick 7-0 lead and never
looked back in a 58-0 win over Haskell Indian
Nations University Saturday in the Oak Bowl. The
Bobcats are now 5-4 on the season.
The Bobcats recorded a four touchdown opening period
to seal the contest early. FB Lynn Meyer (Johnson)
blasted 51 yards up the middle only 1:49 into the
contest and after a Bryan Miller PAT, the 'Cats led
7-0. The big plays continued for Peru State on the
next drive as QB Derek Falor (Sioux Falls, SD)
hooked up with WR Jared Gerdes (Auburn) on a 59 yard
pass and run for a 14-0 count less than five minutes
into the opening stanza. The Bobcat defense got into
the scoring at the 7:03 mark as defensive end Jeff
McQuinn (Council Bluffs, IA) took the ball from an
Indian back and rambled 76 yards untouched for a
21-0 lead. Late in the quarter Falor called his own
number scoring from 1 yard out for the 28-0
advantage. Miller added all four PAT's. The Bobcats
offense ran only 10 plays to account for the scoring
barrage.
The 'Cats maintained their effort into the second
period adding three more scores before half. Falor
hooked up with freshman back Nate Jeter (Tarkio, MO)
on a 44 yard TD, Meyer scored on a 3 yard plunge and
backup kicker Zach Kohloff (Corning, IA) added the
PAT's and a 30 yard field goal as the margin
increased to 45-0 at half.
"The offense made some big plays early and the
defense was outstanding throughout," said Bobcat
coach Terry Clark. "We had solid play from all
aspects (offense, defense and special teams) and the
final result showed what these guys are capable of
with that type of sustained effort."
After a scoreless third period, the Bobcats added a
pair of fourth period scores for the final 58-0
margin. Brent Wrinkle (Treynor, IA) culminated a 10
play- 69 yard scoring drive with a three yard run to
open the final stanza and Jeter added a 10 yard run
at the 7:55 mark for a 57-0 lead. Zach Greunke
(Omaha) added the final PAT.
The Bobcat offense rolled up 437 total yards, 256 on
the ground and 181 via the airways for a balanced
attack. Jeter racked up 107 yards in 12 rushing
attempts while Meyer added 80 in 13 carries. Falor
completed 2 of 3 tosses for 103 yards while backup
James Dawson (Lincoln) was 2-2 for 78 yards.
An active 'Cat defense had several standouts while
producing the shutout. McQuinn added a pair of sacks
to go along with his recovery TD while Bright Norris
(Lincoln) and Alex Meredith (Nebraska City) both
grabbed interceptions. DB Eldro Brown (Stella)
recorded 8 tackles and Dustin Sealey (Hastings)
added six to lead in that department. Twenty-four
different Bobcats had tackles. Haskell, meanwhile,
was held to only 58 yards on the ground. The Indian
passing attack produced 183 with 17 completions in
32 attempts, however, Indian QB's were hurried into
three sacks, a pair of interceptions and three pass
break-ups by the aggressive Bobcat "D".
"It was a fun day for us, a lot of different guys
played and produced," added Clark. "We now want to
take care of business and keep improving during the
final two weeks."
The Bobcats look for their first CSFL win next
Saturday when they travel to Bacone College in
Muskogee, OK for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
