Bobcats
Roll Over Bethany 35-18
The Bobcat football team is enjoying the Kansas
scenery this fall after a 35-18 victory over Bethany
College gives the 'Cats a perfect 3-0 mark vs.
Kansas competition. The wins improves the Bobcats to
4-3 overall, 0-1 CSFL, heading into a big homecoming
contest with NW Oklahoma State this Saturday at the
Oak Bowl in Peru. Kickoff time is 1:00 p.m.
The Bobcats
spotted Bethany a 6-0 lead after a 12 play-70 yard
drive resulted in a short passing touchdown. From
that point, the Bobcats rolled off 28 consecutive
points to hold a commanding 28-6 advantage heading
into the final quarter.
Mike Mertens (Hastings) scored three times for the
'Cats to lead the offensive. His 21 yard run late in
the opening stanza knotted the score while Bryan
Miller (Nebraska City) added the first of his five
extra points to give Peru a 7-6 lead. Lynn Meyer
(Johnson) and Cody Smith (Ceresco) added runs of 4
and 48 yards before Mertens finished the half with a
2 yard scamper. After Bethany cut the deficit to
28-12 early in the third quarter Meyer quickly
ignited a scoring drive with a 70 yard run from the
PSC 14 to the BC 16. Mertens added his final TD on
the next play and a 35-12 lead.
The Bobcats
racked up 375 yards on the ground led by Meyer with
185 on only 16 carries. Mertens added 106 on 17
attempts while Smith finished with 66 on 9 carries.
The 'Cats added 41 yards through the airways for a
400+ yard afternoon. Meanwhile, the Bobcats defense
held Bethany to 62 yards rushing and 198 passing.
Dustin Sealey (Hastings) recorded 10 tackles to lead
the charge. Jeff McQuinn (Council Bluffs) registered
a pair of sacks and Derek Phillips (Valley) had the
Bobcats only interception.
"It was
another solid effort for us on both sides of the
ball," said Bobcat head coach Terry Clark. "Our
offensive line did an excellent job of opening holes
and our backs found them. On the defensive side we
really attacked the football, taking away their
running game was a big plus for us."
