Bobcats Rally, Gain
Split with Dana
(BLAIR, NE) Dana College
jumped to an early 5-1 lead and defeated the Bobcats
8-2 in the opener of a non-league baseball
doubleheader Tuesday in Blair. The 'Cats turned the
tables, however, in game two and prevented the sweep
with a 12-5 come-from-behind win. The Bobcats are
now 14-24-1 for the season, 8-12 in the MCAC.
In game one, the hosts erased a first inning 1-0
deficit with three straight hits off Bobcats starter
Trevor Varley (Central City) culminated by a
three-run homerun and never trailed. The 'Cats
managed eight hits in the game with Gary Hall
(Golden, CO) leading the way with a perfect 3-for-3.
Matt Miller (Omaha) and Will Hays (Tracy, CA) added
two hits each with each player ripping a two-bagger.
Varley and relievers Jon Sanley (Rising City) and
Reece Post (Springfield) were touched for 13 hits
including five for extra bases.
The Bobcats banged out 19 hits in the nightcap
including a 5-for-5 performance from Jon Harder
(Manteca, CA). Three of Harder's hits were doubles
and he also scored three times and had two RBI. Matt
Chavez (Albuquerque, NM) and Mark Houck (Schuyler,
NY) complimented Harder with three hits apiece while
Brandon Jalass (Omaha), Hal and Hays added two hits
each. Houck matched Harder's three double effort and
drove home three Bobcats as the Bobcats hit a school
record ten doubles in the contest. Justin Bruns
(Plattsmouth) picked up the pitching win in relief
of starter Ben Bloom (Vancouver, WA). Bruns worked
3.2 scoreless innings of middle relief and allowed
only one hit. Brandon Diekman (Beatrice) and Matt
Martin (Omaha) followed Bruns each tossing one
inning for PSC.
"We had a much better effort in the second game,"
said 'Cats coach Jason Cronin. "Our bullpen did a
great job and we had a very balanced attack with our
bats."
The Bobcats travel to York College for Friday and
Saturday doubleheaders needing a four-game sweep of
the Panthers to gain an MCAC playoff spot. York
stands 11-9 in the MCAC, 28-20 overall. The games
begin at 5:00 p.m. Friday and 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
