Bobcats Drop Three on
Diamond at York
(YORK) York
College clinched an MCAC baseball playoff position
as the result of a three game sweep of the Peru
State Bobcats last Friday and Saturday in York. The
'Cats fall to 14-27-1 for the season and saw their
hopes for any post-season opportunities eliminated.
The Panthers jumped to a 5-0 lead after two innings
in the opening game and held on for a 5-3 win.
Bobcat hurler Matt Martin (Omaha) settled down after
the rocky start and finished with four shutout
innings, however, the damage was done in the four
run second frame when York banged out five hits. The
Bobcats cut the deficit to 5-2 in the third on a
Gary Hall (Golden, CO) two-run homer but managed
only four other hits during the game.
The Bobcats defense was guilty of seven errors in
game two and as a result York scored seven unearned
runs leading to a 12-2, five inning win. Joakim
Claesson (Stockholm, Sweden) started on the hill for
Peru State and worked the first three innings. He
was tagged with six runs and four hits, four of the
runs being unearned. Brandon Diekman (Beatrice) and
Chris Last (Lincoln) both pitched in relief for the
'Cats. The Bobcats managed only four hits in the
game. Mark Houck (Schuyler, NY) had a RBI double for
the Bobcats in the fourth inning while James Welty
(Elkhorn) drove home the Bobcats final run with a
fifth inning fielders choice.
In the third game York tallied a pair of first
inning runs followed by a six run second burying the
Bobcats with an early 8-0 deficit leading to an 11-7
win. The 'Cats cut the lead in half with a four-run
fourth inning with Houck's three run homerun being
the big blow. Houck finished the day going 2-for-3
adding a run producing sacrifice fly in the seventh
inning. Matt Miller (Omaha) went 3-for-3 to lead an
eleven hit attack while Jon Harder (Manteca, CA) and
Will Hays (Tracy, CA) also matching Houck's two hit
total. Freshman Justin Bruns (Plattsmouth) started
on the hill for the Bobcats and was tagged with the
loss working the first two frames before giving way
to Jon Sanley (Rising City) and Chris Last
(Lincoln).
