Bobcats Win Three of
Four at Central Christian
(McPherson,
KS) The Bobcat baseball team opened 2008 MCAC play
by winning three of four games at Central Christian
College last Thursday and Friday. The 'Cats (7-8-1,
3-1 MCAC) won the opener 9-2, dropped a 9-5 decision
in game two, then finished in strong fashion by
claiming 18-4 and 11-0 wins in the final two games
of the series.
Southpaw Trevor Varley (Central City) tossed a four
hitter with seven strikeouts to gain the win in the
opener. Brandon Jalass (Omaha) led the bats with a
3-4 effort, two runs scored and a RBI. Jon Harder
(Manteca, CA) added a single, double and two RBI.
"We had a very balanced attack and everyone in our
lineup got on base at least once," said Bobcats
coach Jason Cronin.
CCC jumped to an 8-0 lead after three innings and
coasted to the win in game two of the set. Matt
Miller (Omaha) was tagged with the loss working 3.2
innings giving up seven earned runs and six hits.
Brandon Diekman (Beatrice) tossed 2.1 innings in
relief and allowed only one run. Will Hays (Tracy,
CA) led the Bobcat bats with three hits while Gary
Hall (Golden, CO) added a pair of doubles and three
RBI. "We dug ourselves a deep hole and couldn't get
out of it," said Cronin.
The Bobcats bounced back with a vengeance on Friday
plating three runs in the second frame before
blowing the game open with a six run third inning.
"We once again hit the ball very hard," added
Cronin. "It was good to see some guys who had been
off to a slow start get in some quality at bats."
Bob Last (Lincoln) was a perfect 4-4 resulting in
four RBI to lead the way. Matt Davis (Peoria, AZ)
and Matt Martin (Omaha) each were 2-3 with Davis
driving home three runs while Martin plated a pair
and also scored three times himself. Ben Bloom
(Vancouver, WA) earned the mound win tossing four
innings and allowing four hits and two earned runs.
Bloom struck out three.
Freshman hurler Justin Bruns (Plattsmouth) tossed
four shutout innings for the Bobcats scattering four
hits while notching 4 K's to gain a quality win. The
Bobcats backed Bruns with flawless play in the field
while the offense banged out eight hits. Mark Houck
(Schuyler) led the way with a pair of hits while
Austin Reisig (Wichita, KS) had two RBI.
