Bobcats Win Three of Four at Central Christian

(McPherson, KS) The Bobcat baseball team opened 2008 MCAC play by winning three of four games at Central Christian College last Thursday and Friday. The 'Cats (7-8-1, 3-1 MCAC) won the opener 9-2, dropped a 9-5 decision in game two, then finished in strong fashion by claiming 18-4 and 11-0 wins in the final two games of the series.

Southpaw Trevor Varley (Central City) tossed a four hitter with seven strikeouts to gain the win in the opener. Brandon Jalass (Omaha) led the bats with a 3-4 effort, two runs scored and a RBI. Jon Harder (Manteca, CA) added a single, double and two RBI. "We had a very balanced attack and everyone in our lineup got on base at least once," said Bobcats coach Jason Cronin.

CCC jumped to an 8-0 lead after three innings and coasted to the win in game two of the set. Matt Miller (Omaha) was tagged with the loss working 3.2 innings giving up seven earned runs and six hits. Brandon Diekman (Beatrice) tossed 2.1 innings in relief and allowed only one run. Will Hays (Tracy, CA) led the Bobcat bats with three hits while Gary Hall (Golden, CO) added a pair of doubles and three RBI. "We dug ourselves a deep hole and couldn't get out of it," said Cronin.

The Bobcats bounced back with a vengeance on Friday plating three runs in the second frame before blowing the game open with a six run third inning. "We once again hit the ball very hard," added Cronin. "It was good to see some guys who had been off to a slow start get in some quality at bats." Bob Last (Lincoln) was a perfect 4-4 resulting in four RBI to lead the way. Matt Davis (Peoria, AZ) and Matt Martin (Omaha) each were 2-3 with Davis driving home three runs while Martin plated a pair and also scored three times himself. Ben Bloom (Vancouver, WA) earned the mound win tossing four innings and allowing four hits and two earned runs. Bloom struck out three.

Freshman hurler Justin Bruns (Plattsmouth) tossed four shutout innings for the Bobcats scattering four hits while notching 4 K's to gain a quality win. The Bobcats backed Bruns with flawless play in the field while the offense banged out eight hits. Mark Houck (Schuyler) led the way with a pair of hits while Austin Reisig (Wichita, KS) had two RBI.
