Bobcats Sweep Three Game
Series with Paul Quinn
(DALLAS,
TX) The 2008 Bobcats baseball season has officially
arrived as the Bobcats opened the campaign with a
three game series sweep of Paul Quinn College last
weekend in Dallas. The Bobcats of third year coach
Jason Cronin picked up a 15-2 nine inning win on
Friday before sweeping a Saturday doubleheader by
6-1 and 16-10 margins.
"It was just good to get outside," said Cronin. "We
played error free baseball which was more than could
be expected for the first time outdoors." The 'Cats
broke the game open early scoring four runs in the
second inning. Bob Last (Lincoln) singled home the
first run and was assisted by Matt Miller (Omaha)
and Matt Davis (Peoria, AZ) who added an RBI single
and two-run double respectively. The Bobcats added
four runs in the sixth to cement the win.
Davis was 3-6 with 3 RBI and scored three times
himself in leading the 'Cats. Gary Hall (Golden, CO)
added a pair of singles and 3 RBI also scoring three
times. Senior southpaw Trevor Varley (Central City)
opened on the hill and went four innings scattering
six hits and allowing a pair of runs while striking
out three. Freshman Jon Sanley (Rising City) earned
his first collegiate win going the final three
innings without allowing a hit or run. "Sanley came
in and threw strikes," said Cronin. "He challenged
their hitters early in the count and used his off
speed well enough to keep them off balance."
In Saturday's first game a three run second frame
put the 'Cats ahead for good. Matt Garcia
(Albuquerque, NM) blasted a two run double that was
followed by a Brandon Jalass (Omaha) sac fly to
ignite the fireworks. Eric Moulton (Albuquerque, NM)
led the offense with a pair of singles and an RBI.
Senior lefty Ben Bloom (Vancouver, WA) spun a two
hitter over five innings to gain the win. He struck
out two and walked three.
In the nightcap the Bobcats exploded for seven runs
in the first inning to fuel the win. Jon Harder
(Manteca, CA) lined a bases loaded single to plate
the first two runs while Austin Reisig (Wichita, KS)
later added a two-run double. Matt Miller was 3-3
with 4 RBI to lead the attack while Reisig finished
3-4 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. Harder was 2-5
with 4 RBI adding a 2-run double later in the
contest to go along with his first inning hit.
Freshman Matt Martin (Omaha) notched the win from
the hill tossing four innings of 4-hit ball. He
allowed four runs, three of them earned to go along
with three strikeouts.
"It was nice to see the guys complete the sweep. We
played excellent defense until the final game when I
think we hit the wall physically," said Cronin. "Ben
Bloom gave us a great outing in the second game and
we hit the ball when we really needed to."
The Bobcats return to the diamond on February 8 and
9 when they travel to Edmond , OK for a three game
set with Oklahoma Christian University.
