Ozarks Completes Four Game Sweep of Bobcats in Diamond Action

(PERU, NE) College of the Ozarks used solid hitting and pitching to sweep a pivotal four game series with Peru State dropping the 'Cats to 13-23-1 overall and 8-12 in MCAC play. Ozarks moves to 10-6 in league action.

Both teams battled gusty south winds in the Tuesday games as and a result the offenses flourished. C of O plated three runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings and rolled to a 10-5 win in the opener. Bobcat starter Trevor Varley (Central City) was the victim of a pair of wind-aided homeruns during his five inning stint on the mound, however, Ozarks banged out 14 hits in the contest to keep pressure on the Bobcats defensively throughout the contest. Matt Martin (Omaha) was 3-for-4 at the plate for PSC with a RBI to lead a nine hit attack.

The Tuesday nightcap was a slugfest as the two teams combined for 31 runs and 28 hits with Ozarks prevailing 19-12. Eleven errors, seven by the Bobcats, also provided help for the hitting team. The two teams traded runs through the first four innings with PSC battling back from deficits of 6-1, 8-5 and 12-7 before a three run fifth and a four run sixth frame by Ozarks clinched the first day sweep. The 'Cats managed ten hits led by Brandon Jalass (Omaha) who finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Two of his hits were doubles. Justin Bruns (Plattsmouth) suffered his first pitching loss of the season working four innings and allowing nine earned runs and thirteen hits.

The weather settled down on Wednesday and, as a result, so did the pitching and defense for both teams. Martin started on the hill for PSC and tossed five innings of two-run ball before tiring in the sixth when Ozarks scored three times to break open a 3-2 game and build a 6-2 lead in the process. Martin scattered 10 hits while striking out four before giving way to Chris Last (Lincoln) in the sixth. The Bobcats collected seven hits with Austin Reisig (Wichita, KS) leading the way going 2-for-3 with 1 RBI.

Joakim Claesson (Stockholm, Sweden) followed Martin's solid pitching effort with one of his own in the final game of the series. Claesson pitched six innings allowing only one earned run on six hits. The Bobcats offense was held in check, however, by the Ozarks staff and managed only five singles for the game. The 'Cats opened a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the first inning using five walks and Reisig's RBI single. The lead expanded to 4-2 entering the seventh frame before the visitors dented the plate three times to hold on for a 5-4 win and the four game series sweep.

The Bobcats will host Ozarks Christian College for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon at the Peru State Baseball Complex.
