Bobcats Sweep Oklahoma
Wesleyan in Four Game Series
(Peru, NE)
The Bobcat baseball team moved into second place in
the MCAC as the result of a four game series sweep
of Oklahoma Wesleyan at the Bobcat Baseball Complex
March 21 and 22. The Cat's improve to 12-10-1
overall, 7-1 in league play.
A Matt Davis (Peoria, AZ) home run broke a 1-1
deadlock and carried the 'Cats to a 2-1 decision in
the all important first game. Senior southpaw Trevor
Varley (Central City) tossed a complete game four
hitter to earn the win. Varley struck out seven
Eagles in the process. Gary Hall (Golden, CO) led
the offense going 2 for 3. "This was a great win to
start the weekend," said Coach Jason Cronin. "Trevor
(Varley) threw a great game and Davis got the big
hit when we needed it."
Plattsmouth native Justin Bruns (JR) followed
Varley's performance with a similar full game effort
scattering only four hits and striking out four
leading PSC to a 4-1 win. Will Hays (Tracy, CA) and
Mark Houck (Schuyler) had two hits each for the
'Cats. Hays blasted a homerun and had two RBI as
well. "We got another great pitching effort and
scrapped out another win," added Cronin.
In the Saturday opener the Bobcats rolled to a 12-8
win in a slugfest for both teams. Gary Hall led the
way for PSC going 3 for 3 while scoring four times.
Mark Houck finished 1 for 2 and blasted a long
homerun and knocked in five runs for the 'Cats
providing pitcher Matt Martin (Omaha) all the
support he needed to gain the mound win. Martin
tossed four innings scattering four hits while
striking out five opposing hitters.
Matt Miller (Omaha) completed the Bobcats sweep
tossing a two-hitter and allowing only one run in a
5-1 victory. Houck again led the offense ripping a
double and triple in three at bats while scoring
twice himself. Bob Last (Lincoln) and Matt Chavez
(Albuquerque, NM) also had two hits each.
Overall it was a great weekend as we played some
solid baseball," said Cronin. "We are starting to
play with consistency on both sides of the ball."
