Bobcats Drop Three to
Harding University
(SEARCY,
AR) The Bobcat baseball team ventured to Searcy,
Arkansas last weekend for a three game series with
NCAA DII Harding University. A solid opponent topped
the 'Cats 6-2 and 12-2 in a Thursday doubleheader
before they completed the sweep with an 11-5 nine
inning win on Friday. The Bobcats fall to 3-4
overall.
"We played very well in the first game and were a
gust of wind away from taking the lead in the sixth
inning of game one," said Bobcats skipper Jason
Cronin. "We lost a lot of steam in the second game
and couldn't get much going offensively or
defensively."
Matt Davis (Peoria, AZ) was 2-4 in the opener and
missed a grand slam homer in the sixth having to
settle for a long fly out instead as the wind help
keep the ball in the ball park. Will Hays (Tracy,
CA) also had a two hit game with two runs scored
while Austin Reisig (Wichita, KS) added a two-run
single. Trevor Varley (Central City) suffered the
pitching loss in four innings of work.
The Bobcat bats were stymied by the Harding pitching
staff in game two. Matt Martin (Omaha) and Hays each
finished 1-3 with Martin's hit a two-bagger. Mark
Houck (Schuyler, NY), although officially hitless in
four trips, knocked in both Bobcat runs. Jon Sanley
(Rising City) suffered the loss allowing 4 earned
runs and 4 hits in two innings of work giving up 5
runs on 5 hits with one strikeout and two base on
balls.
In game three the Bobcats took a 5-4 lead in the
fifth inning after a Hays double, however, HU
answered the call, however, with a four run rally in
the bottom of the fifth to build a 9-5 cushion. Hays
double plated two runs for the Bobcats while Gary
Hall (Golden, CO) was 1-4 with an RBI and two runs
scored. Ben Bloom (Vancouver, WA) started on the
hill and worked four innings allowing 4 earned runs
on 4 hits. Bloom struck out two and walked one.
Joakim Claesson (Stockholm, Sweden) suffered the
loss allowing 4 runs on 4 hits over 1.1 innings of
relief.
"The guys came out and battled against as good a
team as we will see all year," said Cronin. "Our
players have the right attitude and we will continue
to improve as the year goes on."
The Bobcats are scheduled to play St. Cloud State
University in Peru on Saturday and Sunday, February
23-24 if weather permits. The daily doubleheaders
are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and
noon on Sunday.
