Bobcats Drop Diamond Pair to St. Cloud State

(OTTAWA, KS) Unplayable conditions in Peru forced the shift of the Bobcats 2008 baseball "home opener" to Ottawa, KS. The 'Cats dropped a Saturday doubleheader to NCAA DII St. Cloud (MN) State University by scores of 7-4 and 3-0. The Bobcats fall to 3-6-1 for the season.

SCSU used a nine hit attack to forge a 7-1 sixth inning lead before the Bobcats used a pair of hits, two SCSU errors, a walk and a fielders choice to plate three runs cutting the final margin to 7-4. Matt Miller (Omaha) led the Bobcats with a perfect 3-3 day including an RBI double in the 6th inning. Mark Houck (Schuyler, NY) added a pair of singles and a RBI. Miller also worked the first four innings from the mound and suffered the loss giving up five hits while striking our four and walking two. Matt Martin (Omaha) tossed the final three frames and allowed four earned runs and four hits.

In the second game the Bobcats Ben Bloom (Vancouver, WA) scattered four hits and a pair of earned runs over six innings taking the hard luck loss. "Ben gave us our best outing of the year," said Bobcats coach Jason Cronin. "Unfortunately we saw a great pitcher who kept our bats quiet." The Bobcats managed only a pair of singles for the game. Houck and Brandon Jalass (Omaha) had one each.

"We faced some of the best pitching we will see all year," added Cronin. "Our guys put together some quality at bats but we just couldn't get the big hit in either game. Facing good opponents early will make us a better club by the time MCAC play begins."

The Bobcats, hopeful of improving weather, are scheduled to host Northwestern (IA) College Saturday, March 1st in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
