Bruins Take Four from Bobcats

(BELLEVUE, NE) MCAC power Bellevue University swept a four game series with the Bobcats in weekend baseball action. The Bobcats are now 8-8 in the MCAC, 13-19-1 overall.

In the series opener the Bruins opened an 8-1 lead before PSC battled back to tie the game in the sixth. The 'Cats dented the plate five times in the fifth and twice more in the sixth frame, however, the Bruins managed to score the game winner in the home half of the sixth. Will Hays (Tracy, CA) had the big blow for the Bobcats in the fifth blasting with a grand slam homerun. Jon Harder (Manteca, CA) and Gary Hall (Plattsmouth) also had two hits each for Peru State. Joakim Claesson (Stockholm, Sweden) suffered the pitching loss in relief of starter Trevor Varley (Central City) and reliever Chris Last (Lincoln). Claesson worked three innings allowing four hits and only one run. "We played well but came up a little short," said Bobcats coach Jason Cronin. "Our hitters did a nice job against some quality pitching."

PSC managed only three hits in the second game and again fell behind early as the Bruins scored three times in the opening frame and coasted to a 6-0 win. Freshman hurler Justin Bruns (Plattsmouth) took the loss allowing eight hits over five innings of work while striking out five Bruins. Last worked the final frame and struck out two opposing hitters.
In the Saturday opener Bellevue again got out of the gates quickly scoring six times in their first at bat and cruised to a 16-4 win in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule. Will Hays collected two of the Bobcats seven hits including a double to lead the offense. Senior Ben Bloom (Vancouver, WA) suffered the mound loss working 2.2 innings allowing ten runs and nine hits. Three of the runs were unearned as the 'Cats committed three early errors. "We struggled with our pitching and we made several mistakes in the field which they (Bellevue) took advantage of," said Cronin.

Matt Martin (Omaha) tossed four strong innings in the final game of the series as the Bobcats trailed only 2-0 after four frames, however, the Bruins roughed up the Bobcat pitchers for seven runs over the final two innings to claim a 9-0 shutout win. Jon Harder had two of the Bobcats three hits for the game. "It was a tough weekend for us," added Cronin, "but we are still .500 in conference play and control our own destiny for reaching the playoffs if we play well down the stretch."

The Bobcats return home this weekend and will host College of the Ozarks in Friday and Saturday doubleheaders beginning at 1:00 p.m. each day.
